Extended crane or neutral grip: With the extended crane type shear, the thumb hole has moved further forward and the thumb handle is shorter. The thumb is placed in front of the index finger, which is the neutral resting position of the hand, hence the name of neutral grip

For a more evident consistency, use the scissors at an angle up to 45 degrees, taking care to cut only small pieces at a time.

A thicker corner is used to obtain a cut in mixed layers.

If you prefer a subtle effect, you can keep the scissors straight, creating softer styles. This method still eliminates excess volume and helps the hair feel better without being dull and difficult to comb.

Even if you have a straight strip, a small thin spot can help you improve your appearance without taking away style's value. To use the cut of dots for a better effect, if you have a shorter hairstyle, apply the technique in everything to weave the hair and improve its appearance. Gripping Your Hair Shears

Begin by holding and balancing the scissors like in the video.

The ring finger is in the finger hole of the fixed blade. The finger hole of the fixed blade should be placed just below the second joint of the ring finger.

Put your little finger on the tip of your shear. 

Place the index finger and the middle finger on the axis of the fixed blade. The four fingers should be relaxed along the axis and tongue.

The applied pressure of the fingers on the top of the fixed blade creates a balance. It is this balance that keeps the scissors stable and controlled during the cut.

The freedom of movement will be limited so that the fingers are wrapped around the shears.

Once you reach this balance, your hair shears will move wherever you want them to go.

It Is All In The Fingers

With your fingers relaxed and fully extended, your thumb should not be able to reach the moving leaf.

Bend your fingers in the base, lowering the movable blade towards your thumb. Once again, it is important to emphasize that we lower our fingers on the thumb by bending the base of the fingers (think of the puppet, not the form of c)

Instead of putting your thumb on the moving blade, push the moving blade to create a tension just below the second articulation of the ring finger. 

An improper use of the scissors is to place the thumb on the movable blade. This limits their range of motion while encouraging "chewing".

To make sure that your hair shears have the best performance, you should really do two things every day: clean them and adjust the tension.

Having the correct cutting tension is essential for operating the scissors, and with today's blade designs, a little more tension is better than too loose.

Setting the voltage too low can cause the hair to bend or come out of the cut, while setting too high can reduce the length of the edge.

In addition, additional pressure is required to open and close the shear, which contributes to repetitive strain injury. The perfect tension prevents bending and pushing, so opening and closing the scissors is easier.

Setting Tension

Make sure you clean and lubricate the hair shear. 

With the shears free enough (one or two clicks of the tension screw backwards) hold the thumb grip and take the part of the finger about 45 ° towards the point where the blades are connected.

Then release the side of the finger, if it drops, it is too slow and turn the adjuster to the right to tighten.

Here at Kenchii Professional we are saddened by the recent events taking place with Hurricane Harvey. We wanted to provide some information on how to deal with your shears if they have been fully submerged into water.

Shears are stainless steel, however, they are a different type of stainless steel than home appliances. Stainless steel cutlery can oxidize due to a higher concentration of carbon. This information can be valuable to not only scissors but clipper blades as well. Once your tools are fully submerged they will not oxidize initially, the oxidation process begins once they are exposed to oxygen. Listed below are a few steps on how to avoid oxidation on your tools:

Step 1: Dry Thoroughly:

Dry the hair cutting tools with a dry cloth or apply heat with a hairdryer. It is important to address all pivot points, screws, and hardware. This addresses moisture in every aspect of the tools to avoid hardware from seizing due to rust. **ONLY IF YOU ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE on how to disassemble and reassemble your hair cutting tools you can disassemble them completely. ** However, if you are not knowledgeable on how to reassemble your tools you can still thoroughly dry them to the best of your ability. Once your shears and blades have been thoroughly dried reassemble them for the next step.

Step 2: Properly Oil 

Promptly oil your shears with a light-weight machine oil in all pivot points and the length of the blade. Once that is complete the tools need to be stored properly.

Step 3: Store Properly

The tools need to be stored in breathable material such as a leather case or cloth. Be sure not to store in plastic sleeves or plastic boxes because moister can be retained.

                     **Any surface rust that does appear later can possibly be polished out. **

Part 3: Parabens

Fast Facts:
• Used as a preservative in hair products and cosmetics
• Widely used due to low cost
• Chemical make-up can mimic estrogen
• Most common varieties are easy to spot in ingredients lists as –paraben is the suffix
• Some parabens/paraben-like molecules exist in natural foods and plants in extremely minimal amounts (thousandths of a percent)
• Small amounts can be metabolized and out of our systems within 36-72 hours

Fear Factor: Do parabens contribute to cancer growth?
In the 90s parabens were classified as xenoestrogens, or estrogen mimicking agents. Even when applied in small amounts, the cumulative effects of repeated exposure to hormone disrupting chemicals has been linked to cancers, with estrogen disruptors, like parabens, being linked to breast cancer.

An unbiased study?
Dr. Philippa Darbre, a british oncology researcher, is well known in the field of medical research as leading the paraben-cancer study in 2004. The results of this study sparked major concern over the safety of parabens as the test results indicated a definite presence of parabens in malignant breast cancer tumors. However, skeptics of the study raise two concerns, the controls were lacking as no healthy breast tissue was tested for evidence of parabens and the mere presence of parabens in cancerous tissue doesn’t necessarily mean they are the cause of the cancer.

Hot… Cold… or Mold?
The low cost of parabens makes them an economical and efficient choice for cosmetics manufacturers looking to add a preservative to their product. If left untreated, mold and bacteria would flourish in warm, wet environments. Parabens inhibit that growth and without any preservatives we’d have to store our cosmetics in the refrigerator.

Alternatives?
At this time there is insufficient evidence to prove a direct link to parabens and cancers, but trends and consumer demand are causing companies to remove or begin phasing out the use of parabens. There are numerous alternatives available, but the efficacy and safety of some of the alternatives have come under speculation as well. A few of the popular alternatives are:

• Natural herbs, vitamins, and oils-This is a definite selling point for manufacturers targeting the eco-conscious market, but it’s important to know that, while effective, several of the oils, herbs, and vitamins used as preservatives are only effective in the short term, we’re talking a year or less. These preservatives also have to be used in large quantities in order to be effective enough to halt bacteria or fungus growth, if you have sensitive skin this could result in irritation.
• Phenoxyethanol-Derived from alcohol, this effective and cost-efficient alternative to parabens has been approved for safe use in cosmetics and foods but has raised some concerns as it potentially has carcinogenic properties.
• Sodium Benzoate- A preservative found naturally in foods and used as ingredients in several food items, this is a natural alternative to parabens that is not expensive to produce. A valid concern for the use of Sodium Benzoate is its ability to produce a known carcinogen, benzene, when used in conjunction with small amounts of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and exposure to warm conditions. To counteract this benzene reaction either the vitamin C (ascorbic acid) levels should be increased, or the pH level of the cosmetic should be increased. The only real fear here is potential effects of repeated exposure, as the amounts of benzene that could potentially be present in cosmetics are extremely small or non-existent.

Ultimately, the use or avoidance of parabens in personal care products is a personal choice. The current alternatives may be safer, but pose some safety concerns as well. Before you go out of your way to avoid them or decide to ignore the ingredients lists all together, it’s important to research the ingredients that are concerning you and make an informed decision.

*As a disclaimer, each of the 3 ingredients (silicone, sulfates, and parabens) have been approved for use by the FDA in the levels currently found in cosmetics.

Part 2: Sulfates

Fast Facts:
• Found in many personal care products
• Act as surfactants, when combined with water they remove greasy substances
• Synthetic ingredient made from petrolatum, sulfur, and lauryl alcohol
• There are several different types of sulfates, most commonly SLS and SLES

So let’s get to busting myths right away…

Myth #1: All sulfates are bad
Truth: Not all sulfates are equal! Did you know there are literally hundreds of types of sulfates? The most commonly used sulfates are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and we see these chemicals in more than 90% of all shampoo or soap products.

Myth #2: Sulfates aren’t necessary
Truth: Sulfates are surfactants, or compounds that can absorb both oil and water and easily be rinsed away with water. We all know that oil and water don’t mix, so to achieve squeaky clean hair these chemicals are essential. It’s true you can get clean hair without sulfates, but the standard of clean we’re accustomed to isn’t as easily achieved without them.

Myth #3: Sulfates cause cancer
Truth: Several studies have concluded that sulfates aren’t a carcinogen and when used as directed pose no health risks to adults or children. The root of this myth does have some truth however, as a carcinogen known as 1.4-dioxane is a by-product of SLES. Chemists remove as much as possible but scant amounts are still found in shampoos and soaps containing SLES. Scientists have found that the amount of 1.4-dioxane that the average adult or child is exposed to is well below any amount that could pose a health risk.

Now that we know not all sulfates are bad, they don’t pose a cancer risk, and they provide better cleansing action than products without sulfates, what is there to worry about? The answer is hair and scalp health!

Sulfates are a common irritant and can cause redness, irritation, and itchy, dry skin (translation DANDRUFF!). If you have sensitive skin or skin irritations like psoriasis or eczema, sulfates can exacerbate these issues.

The efficacy of sulfates in removing oil from our hair is also the cause of our hyper active sebaceous glands, leading to clogged pores on our scalp which can result in hair loss. When using harsh sulfates, shampooing and conditioning becomes a cycle, we shampoo to get rid of excess oil that is caused by our harsh shampoo stripping those oils away. This cycle can be broken but often takes a few weeks for our scalp to balance out.

By removing oil, sulfates remove moisture and disrupt the natural moisture balance of our skin and hair. This process over time causes dry, brittle hair that is dull and prone to breakage, not to mention the potential for excessive skin irritation. If you color your hair you should be especially cautious about the products you use as stripping moisture and altering the natural balance of oil can wreak havoc on hair color. The harsher your shampoo the less life you’ll get from your color in terms of permanence, health, and vibrancy. Curly and coarse hair types should aim for sulfate free shampoos and products when possible as these hair types require more moisture and care to maintain health versus other hair types

.

Sulfate free shampoos can be pricey, as sulfates are an ultra-cheap ingredient for shampoo manufacturers, but when you find yourself comparing shampoos and searching labels, opt for a sulfate free version at least once and compare results. You may find your scalp is less itchy and your hair feels more moisturized than with your previous shampoo!

Part 1: Silicone

Fast Facts:
• Comes in two forms, water soluble and non-water soluble
• Found in countless hair care products
• A tell-tale sign is any ingredient with a “cone” or “con” suffix
• Coats hair for a smoother appearance
• Silicone poses no health risks

Silicone products themselves are not inherently bad for your hair, in fact, they don’t truly affect your hair at all. Both water soluble and non-water soluble silicone acts as a smoothing agent by coating your hair and creating a smoother, sleeker appearance. The difference between the 2 forms is that non-water soluble silicone requires sulfates to remove it from the hair strands, while the water soluble form rinses clean with water. The requirement of sulfates to remove the non-water soluble form makes this a poor choice for consistent use. With prolonged use hair health can suffer as sulfates are harsh and remove natural oils from the hair and scalp. This creates a cycle of stripping natural oils and adding artificial moisture, which can be damaging and stressful for your hair.

Silicone seals in moisture by coating the hair, which gives us the smooth sleek feel we love; but this means it also seals out any additional product from permeating our hair shaft and boosting the health of our actual hair. Conditioning and leave in treatments aren’t as effective when we use shampoos and conditioners containing silicone because of the barrier created by the silicone coating. However, this barrier can be a good thing for high heat styling and to make combing your hair easier.

Within the 2 forms of silicone, there are various types that differ by weight and adhesion to the hair. The lighter types, like cyclomethicone and dimethicone copolyol, feel very slippery in your hair and leave little to no trace once they break down with water. Lightweight silicones are fine for more frequent use as they’re less likely to cause build up on the scalp and strands. The heavier types, like amodimethicones and dimethicones, are thicker and usually found in leave in conditioners and serums. Heavier silicones tend to attract dirt and pollutants from the air and are very difficult to remove without harsh surfactants. Any version with the prefix amo-, amino-, or suffix -amine has been chemically modified to adhere better to the hair strand, which feels smooth but requires a harsher shampoo to clear residue and can cause silicone build up leading to flat, dull looking hair.

We all want shiny, lush, head turning hair and this look can be achieved with products containing silicone, but does this stop at just the "look" of healthy hair? Silicone doesn’t pose any health risks, but our research shows it doesn’t necessarily help our hair either. 

A best practice is to reduce the use of products containing silicone and make sure that we’re using gentle clarifying shampoos to reduce any build up that can dull our locks. Ensure any conditioning or heat protectant products you often use on your hair contain the lighter versions of silicone and steer clear of heavier versions for more frequent use.

Condition with Care

Putting on heavy layers may work for our wardrobe, but not for our hair. Conditioning is important all year, but winter conditioning treatments need careful selection. Hat head is one of style’s biggest enemies in the cold seasons, our beloved knit caps steal our volume and leave our hair looking flat. Heavy conditioners worsen this problem by weighing our hair down. Instead, opt for daily lightweight conditioning sprays or wash out treatments. One of our favorite conditioning treatments that doesn’t add weight to our locks is an all-natural hot oil or olive oil treatment. Douse the hair from the nape of your neck to the ends with an adequate amount of oil, wrap in a hot towel and leave on for around 15 minutes, then rinse completely. The fats in the oil nourish our hair and smooth the cuticle for sleek hair without the weight.

Stop Static!

The dry air in winter makes it easy for static to wreak havoc on our style! Decrease the likelihood of a static attack by choosing brushes that aren’t as likely to hold a charge.
