Cold Weather Hair Care

Posted by Margaret Barnhart on 14th Feb 2017

Though most of us are ready for spring, winter doesn’t officially end until March 2oth. The cold, dry air of winter puts extra stress on our hair and requires special attention in order to keep it healthy. Follow these 5 tips for cold weather hair care and you’ll be able to bring healthy, sexy hair into spring!

Condition with Care

Putting on heavy layers may work for our wardrobe, but not for our hair. Conditioning is important all year, but winter conditioning treatments need careful selection. Hat head is one of style’s biggest enemies in the cold seasons, our beloved knit caps steal our volume and leave our hair looking flat. Heavy conditioners worsen this problem by weighing our hair down. Instead, opt for daily lightweight conditioning sprays or wash out treatments. One of our favorite conditioning treatments that doesn’t add weight to our locks is an all-natural hot oil or olive oil treatment. Douse the hair from the nape of your neck to the ends with an adequate amount of oil, wrap in a hot towel and leave on for around 15 minutes, then rinse completely. The fats in the oil nourish our hair and smooth the cuticle for sleek hair without the weight.

Stop Static!

The dry air in winter makes it easy for static to wreak havoc on our style! Decrease the likelihood of a static attack by choosing brushes that aren’t as likely to hold a charge. We suggest the Wooden Pin Brush by Kenchii because the bristles are far enough apart to reduce friction and the wooden pins don’t hold an electric charge, unlike metal brushes and combs. An ion generating iron, like the ENV Slim Iron by Kenchii, will also aid in reducing static by balancing the charge of our hair and giving us sleeker style.

Turn down the heat!

Though it’s tempting, try not to use too much heat on your hair during the winter as it increases dryness, resulting in dull, brittle hair that breaks. If your iron doesn’t have adjustable heat settings, check out this one from Kenchii and use the lowest possible temperature setting to achieve your style. This same advice goes for heat appliances we use for warmth, the dry, hot air reduces the humidity in our environment and leaves our hair with little moisture. (hello static!) It’s best to avoid direct heat from space heaters and to use a humidifier when possible.

Opt for Up-dos

For medium to longer lengths, high collar coats and scarves can cause tangles at the nape of our neck. Dry hair and tangles can mean mega breakage! Updos protect our hair from damaging tangles and help us keep our hands out of it, reducing annoying static. To reduce frizz under hooded coats, wrap your hair in a silk scarf to diminish friction from thicker winter fabrics.

Trim

Sticking to a regular hair cut routine is just as important during winter. Trimming the ends of our hair prevents further splitting from the dry conditions and makes hair-styling and care more manageable.
